Intergenerational Meetups

In Person LGBT Meetup Graphics (10)

Capitol Hill Village continued hosting monthly in person LGBT intergenerational events. Activities have included museum visits, a zine workshop, cafe meet ups, visiting the US Botanical Garden, and playing board games.

Panel on LGBT+ Inclusion In Nursing Homes and Assisted Living Facilities

Capitol Hill Village hosted a panel discussion on LGBT+ inclusion in nursing homes and assisted living facilities. Featuring representatives from Carroll Manor, the Lisner-Louise-Dickson-Hurt Home, and the Residences and Thomas Circle.

Beginning late 2024, Capitol Hill Village developed a new Affinity Group the "LGBT Member Meetups" which occurs once a month. CHV Members gather at a local restaurant to socialize and get to know each other.

Capitol Hill Village, DACL, the DC LGBTQ+ Community Center, IONA Senior Services, and Seabury Out and About put on a spring fling dinner and dance for LGBT older adults to have fun and celebrate together.

2024 LGBT Valentine's Day Dance

's Day Dance

Genevieve Johnson, Capitol Hill Village, DACL, the DC LGBTQ+ Community Center, and Seabury Out and About came together for a wonderful Valentine's Day celebration. This included an evening of live music from DC's Different Drummers, delicious food, and other exciting activities.

Finding A LGBT Inclusive Care Community Panel

This panel focused on what prospective LGBT residents should look out for, who to talk to, and how to find the best place suited for you.

Panelists included Lisa Friedman, a residential care specialist, Ames Simmons, LGBTQ policy consultant, and Makeda Vanderpuije, executive director at LeadingAge DC.

UPDATED DMV Queers Save the Date

In 2024 Capitol Hill Village set out to host five special in person LGBT intergenerational events with local group, DMV Queers. Including our kickoff, trivia night, museum scavenger hunt, and board game night.

Queer Stories Meetup

Queer Stories Meetup (1)

Capitol Hill Village attended the culminating performance of The Theatre Lab’s Queer Stories program. The performance was made up of LGBT+ people ages 14 to 80, who worked with instructors over 11 weeks to craft a powerful and engaging production around their lives and experiences.

 

Intergenerational Extravaganza: A Day of Connection and Creativity

The Intergenerational Extravaganza focused on building relationships through discussions, film, and other creative activities. We watched and discussed the series Not Another Second (2021) and particiated in interactive workshops facilitated by the Theatre Lab, Whitman-Walker, DMV Queers, and community members.

The Dupont Circle Village and its LGBTQ Friends group hosted a gay pride trivia party on June 5th at the Duplex Diner.

This event series, hosted by Capitol Hill Village, began in 2022 and continued into 2023.  These events focused on supporting LGBT grandchildren/loved ones. So far, attendees have discussed how to talk to others about a family member that recently came out, addressing reactions, and more.

In July of 2023, we hosted an info session with the DC Office of Human Right focusing on DC Law 23-154: Care for LGBTQ Seniors and Seniors with HIV Amendment Act of 2020. This event was part of our project on LGBT inclusion in continuing care retirement communities in the DMV.

This was the first ever College Roundtable hosted by Capitol Hill Village! This event highlighted the key issues among LGBT college students and LGBT elders; and engaged participants and speakers in a discussion on how we can work together to address these issues.

The second annual DC Villages Pride Celebration was held at St.Matthew's Church in Southwest on June 16th. We enjoyed an evening of socializing, trivia, and celebrating LGBT+ older adults and the entire LGBT+ community.

Capitol Hill Village and Georgetown University's LGBTQ Resource Center partnered together for Yappy Hour--a pet friendly and themed social hour.

Poetry Workshops and Open Mic Night

These events were a partnership between Capitol Hill Village, Visible Magazine, and Terrific Inc. We held four poetry workshops and an open mic night. These events focused on learning about poetry, engage in activities for writing poetry, and sharing poetry.

Memory Related Diseases and Caregiving Among the LGBT* Community

Alzheimer's Association Events

In April of 2021, the National Capital Area Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association and Capitol Hill Village partnered to provide a series of events addressing memory related diseases and caregiving among the LGBT* community.

The first event focused on hearing from LGBT* individuals, caregivers, and other attendees thru open discussion. The second event was an informative presentation based on feedback from the previous event.

Film and Discussion Series

In November 2021, Capitol Hill Village and the Interactivity Foundation hosted a three part film and conversation series about gender and sexuality, focusing on experiences of LGBTQ+ individuals. Each of the events involved viewing a different short (10-20 minute) film. The Interactivity Foundation facilitated small group conversations about the main ideas of the films.

This multivillage pride celebration featured speakers, instructional dancing, and a raffle for anyone wearing pride gear. All were encouraged to donate throughout the month of June to Mary's House for Older Adults or provide physical donations to the Wanda Alston Foundation. 

Rainbow Challah Tutorial and Discussion

This event was a rainbow challah making tutorial and discussion. Challah is a type of bread traditionally baked to celebrate the Jewish sabbath. Attendees also engaged in a discussion about food, identity, and community. 

Taking the Truck OUT!

We hosted the AU Humanities Truck “Taking the Truck OUT!: Recording Lesbian Activism in the AIDS Crisis Exhibit". The Humanities Truck is mobile platform for “collecting, exhibiting, preserving, and expanding dialogue around the humanities.” Attendees had the opportunity to view the exhibit and provide accounts of their experiences and involvement with activism and caregiving during the AIDS epidemic.

Rainbow Postal (1)

In 2021, the Triangle Community Center in partnership with Capitol Hill Village, conducted a 6 month Pen Pal Program pairing LGBTQ individuals over 18 with those who are over 65 to build intergenerational connections through letter writing or email.
