Cultivate Community

Capitol Hill Village has been hosting LGBT events since 2020. We regularly host in-person and virtual programs around DC. Our goal is to help LGBT folks connect, access resources, and build intergenerational friendships.

Affinity Groups

Learning

History & Biography Book Club-Book club members select books in the fields of history and biography for analysis and discussion at bi-monthly meetings (meets bi-monthly on the 3rd Tuesday from 3:00pm to 4:00pm)
Literary Club-The club alternates fiction and non-fiction, both classic and contemporary, with an occasional evening for poetry or a play. The group reads one work a month and then meets for discussion (meets on the 3rd Tuesday from 4:30pm to 6:00pm)
CHV Audio Book Club-The CHV Audio Book Club operates as a traditional book club, but with an audio component for those who may be visually impaired or prefer listening to books rather than reading them (meets on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays from 2:00pm to 4:00pm)
Defending Democracy– The Defending Democracy Group aims to serve as a clearinghouse for information about upcoming events, provide points of contact for CHV members interested in other political groups, brainstorm ways to support local initiatives, and provide a friendly and supportive group to help us get through this together (bi-weekly meetings on Wednesdays from 5:00pm to 6:30pm)

Wellness

Qigoing– Qi Gong is a form of gentle energy-enhancing exercise, suitable for any age or physical condition, that consists of flowing movement and breathing techniques (meets Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10:00am)
Tai Chi-Tai Chi is a practice that builds balance and smoothness of movements (meets on Mondays at 11:00am)
Recharge and Restorative Yoga-A mix of sitting/standing exercises targeting overlooked body muscles (meets Mondays and Thursdays from 4:00pm to 5:00pm)
Easy Strollers-This gentle stroll is suitable for persons of all abilities, as the group’s pace is slow and there are many benches available for resting (meets Mondays at 9:30am)
Kayaking-Meets from April and October. Kayak at local spots like Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens, all skill levels welcome (meets every other Monday at 10:00am weather permitting)

Social & Games

Games and Puzzles-Play a variety of card and board games at the local game store Labyrinth (meets on the Second and Fourth Thursday of the month from 2:00pm to 4:00pm)
Mahjong-Similar to the Western card game Rummy, Mahjong originated in China and is a game of skill, strategy and calculation and involves a certain degree of chance (meets on Wednesdays from 3:00pm to 5:00pm)
Petanque-Petanque is very much like bocce; it is a French game played by teams (up to three) using boules (balls). New players get instructions and can borrow the boules of other group members (meets on Monday afternoons)
Women’s Conversation and Connection Group-Meet with Village members and volunteers in person to make connections and friendships (meets on Fridays at 11:30am)
Wyze Guys-This CHV men’s group organizes meetings on topics of special interest to men (on health, cognition, nutrition, and politics,) hosts a lunch once a month at a local restaurant for chat and camaraderie (meets on the Third Monday of the month at 1:00pm)
LGBT Member Meetup-Get to know your neighbors at Capitol Hill Village’s monthly LGBT Member Meetup and enjoy an afternoon of socializing at local restaurants on the Hill (meets once a month, see the calendar for details)
Taking Care of Yourself: A Group For Men-This is a discussion group for men to talk about self-care, especially but not exclusively as it relates to caring for others, such as a loved one with an illness or disability (meets every other Monday at 3:00pm)
What We’re Hearing-Members are invited to participate in discussions on topics such as how to know you need hearing help, how to get that help, the types of hearing devices and accessories that are available, and how to get help with devices when needed (meets on the first Wednesday of the month at 3:30pm)

The Arts

Cinephiles-The Cinephiles see contemporary films on their first release. The group selects five or six films each month. Members see at least two of the films on their own and then come together to discuss them (meets at 5:30pm on the Second Thursday of the month)
Village Opera Society-Expand your knowledge of opera, discuss upcoming events of interest. Presentations usually focus on performances by opera companies in the Washington area, with descriptions of the history, synopsis, and music of each opera (meets on the Fourth Thursday of the month at 5:00pm)
Theater Group-The Theater group enjoys seeing local shows and having discussions afterwards. Members will purchase tickets and attend theater performances on their own, then meet to discuss the event at a member’s home or other venue (see calendar for meeting schedule)
Poetry Readers- Join us for a lively conversation about what we think poems mean and more exploration of the poems’ topics mean (meets on the Second Wednesday of the month at 2:00pm)
Meet, Walk, View, Eat-Walk with CHV members to the National Gallery of Art where we choose our individual viewing agendas. We meet for lunch before walking back up the Hill (meets on the Third Thursday of the month in Spring and Fall)
