THIS IS A CROSSBAR

Village Literary Club

Tuesday, April 18 at 6 pm to 7:30 pm (signup deadline was 12 pm, Apr 17)
home of Mary Procter, 324 G St SE, 20 steps

In April the Literary Club will turn to non-fiction: Jill Lepore`s Book of Ages: the Life and Opinions of Jane Franklin (2013, 267 pp, plus notes). Ben Franklin`s youngest sister Jane is unknown to most of us, but she was a fascinating person: an avid reader and writer, an astute political thinker and commentator, and a mother of 12! Her life (described in the many letters she exchanged with Ben) was obviously very different from his. Lepore, a Harvard historian and New Yorker staff writer, weaves the contrasting lives of these two remarkable people to give us "one of the great untold stories of American history." The Book of Ages was one of the Washington Post`s "10 Best Books of 2013," a Notable New York Times Book, and a National Book Award finalist.
