THIS IS A CROSSBAR

Village Literary Club

Tuesday, March 21 at 6 pm to 7:30 pm (signup deadline was 12 pm, Mar 20)
home of Harriet Rogers, 503 A Street, SE 5 steps

In March, the Village Literary Club will read Willa Cather`s novel "Death Comes for the Archbishop" (299 pages, 1927). This work by Cather is perhaps less well known than "My Antonia" or "O Pioneers!" In it Cather brings us an intimate view of the sprawling New Mexico frontier through a French priest, the newly appointed bishop of this territory of mainly native American tribes and Mexicans. We get a fascinating picture of the early days of the territory as the new bishop has to negotiate religious rivalries, renegade priests, and local superstitions and traditions. Members who have visited the area will enjoy the history provided by the work. The novel is listed by Time Magazine as one of the "100 Best English Language Novels 1923-2005."
